Houston Civic Engagement Associate

Organizational Summary:

BAJI fights for the rights of Black migrants and African Americans through organizing, legal advocacy, research, policy, and narrative building to improve the conditions of Black communities by advancing racial justice and migrant rights. BAJI’s mission is to build collective power among Black communities to advocate for equity and justice in our laws, policies, and communities. 

BAJI’s civic engagement team builds community power through mobilizing and educating on the importance of the issues and advocacy that prioritizes issues that impact Black migrant and African American communities to increase the political participation of voters and non-voters in local, state, and national elections and policies.

Position Summary:

BAJI seeks an experienced organizer to join our Civic Engagement Team in Houston, Texas. The Civic Engagement Associate (Houston) will be contracted to advocate, educate, and organize Black immigrants, surrounding civic engagement issues & voter engagement in Houston, TX.

Duties & Essential Job Functions:

• Support BAJI’s voter registration plan to increase participation amongst suppressed voter communities
• Participate in local immigrant rights group meetings, take notes, and report back to internal stakeholders
• Build relationships with partner organizations, mobilize communities through nonpartisan voter engagement, and support advocacy and coalition-building efforts. Engage with the community in high-traffic areas (houses of worship, community centers, emergency migrant shelters, market centers/restaurants, and social events). 
• Participate in organization-wide work, virtual meetings, BAJI campaign efforts, and events. This effort is both digital and in-person only with COVID-19 safety protocols.
• Educate Black people about voter suppression, the electoral process, and the importance of voting while supporting civic engagement campaigns. 
• Support in building our database of Black immigrant organizations throughout the South
• Recruit volunteers and expand capacity through VAN
• Conduct and assist with text & phone banking, canvassing, and other tools like HustleTrack, collect and implement data strategy with Mobilize.us, and promote activities on social media.

Qualifications

• Must have verifiable organizing experience.
• Organizing or advocacy, issue campaign experience
• Ability to work with diverse groups and organizations
• Understanding of social and racial justice movement dynamics

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS 

Salary: $65,000, commensurate with experience.
