Legal Advocacy Coordinator

Full-time – Houston


Organizational Summary:

BAJI fights for the rights of Black migrants and African Americans through organizing, legal advocacy, research, policy, and narrative building to improve the conditions of Black communities by advancing racial justice and migrant rights. BAJI’s mission is to build collective power among Black communities to advocate for equity and justice in our laws, policies, and communities. 

Legal advocacy is a central component in BAJI’s fight for the rights of Black migrants. BAJI’s legal team works to combat the criminalization and deportation of Black immigrant communities through a powerful three-pronged approach, which includes direct legal representation, impact litigation, and legal training in communities facing removal. BAJI’s approach to practicing, changing, and teaching the law has provided critical assistance to Black immigrants and achieved long-lasting impacts on immigration systems.

Position Summary:

As a Legal Advocacy Coordinator, you will play a vital role in advocating for legal rights and justice for Black migrants as part of BAJI’s Southern Strategy to assist new arrivals and Black immigrants in the United States. You will be responsible for spearheading legal advocacy efforts for Black migrant communities, providing support to both our clients and other constituents, and liaising with legal professionals and relevant external stakeholders.

Duties & Essential Job Functions:

  1. Legal Advocacy:
        • Develop and implement strategies for legal advocacy campaigns to address specific issue areas (i.e., detention conditions, criminalization of Black immigrants, supporting Black LGBTQ+ new arrivals) or specific cases (locally).
        • Coordinate with BAJI’s Legal Team, BAJI’s Policy Team, BAJI’s Organizing Team, and other stakeholders to ensure effective collaboration and alignment of efforts.
        • Participate in local and national legal advocacy calls, campaigns, and other initiatives led by organizational partners.
        • Monitor state and federal legislative developments and legal precedents relevant to BAJI’s mission and objectives.
        • Prepare and disseminate legal advocacy materials, including fact sheets, policy briefs, and educational resources.

     

  2. Client Support:
        • Provide guidance and support to clients or constituents seeking general legal assistance or information.
        • Advocate on behalf of clients in legal proceedings or administrative processes.

     

  3. Communication and Outreach:
    • Serve as a spokesperson for the organization on legal advocacy issues, representing the organization in meetings, hearings, and public forums.
    • To advance advocacy goals, develop and maintain relationships with media contacts, policymakers, community leaders, and other stakeholders.
    • Participate in outreach activities, such as BAJI’s legal education workshops, training sessions, and community events, to raise awareness of legal rights and resources.
    • Participate in organization-wide work, virtual meetings, BAJI campaign efforts, and events. This effort is both digital and in-person (COVID-19 safety protocols).

     

  4. Data Management and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate records of advocacy activities.
    • Compile data and prepare reports on legal advocacy outcomes, including successes, challenges, and areas for improvement.
    • Utilize data analysis to inform strategic decision-making and advocacy planning.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in law, political science, social work, or a related field (advanced degree preferred).
  • Prior experience in immigration law, legal advocacy, and/or community organizing
  • Knowledge of legal principles, procedures, and systems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively 
  • Proficiency in research, writing, and analysis.
  • Commitment to social justice, equity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups and organizations.
  • Understanding of social and racial justice movement dynamics.

Salary: $75,000, commensurate with experience.
