BAJI Condemns Texas Redistricting Plan as a Coordinated Attack on Black Political Power, Black Immigrants, and Democracy
Texas is not redrawing lines — it’s redrawing the rules of who counts, who matters, and who is allowed to have power
August 7th, 2025- The Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI) condemns the latest assault on Black people and Black political power unfolding in Texas. Governor Abbott and Republican legislators, under the influence of Trumpist extremism, are advancing a racially and politically motivated redistricting scheme designed to dilute the voices and political strength of Black, immigrant, and working-class communities. This is not governance, this is fascism.
Texas is home to the largest Black population in the United States, with over 4 million Black residents, including one of the largest Black immigrant populations in the country. The state is also home to the largest population of Nigerians outside of Nigeria. Many of these residents, including naturalized Black immigrants and their U.S.-born children, are among those being denied fair representation through this redistricting effort.
Texans in Houston and across the state are still recovering from devastating floods, mass displacement, and infrastructure collapse. Yet instead of focusing on these urgent needs, Republican lawmakers are consolidating power. The timing of this political maneuver is no accident; it is a deliberate attempt to deflect from the crisis, deepen disenfranchisement, and suppress multiracial and immigrant-led political coalitions.
The proposed maps would create five new GOP-leaning districts by cracking apart communities of color and packing our votes into fewer, less impactful districts. As Rep. Jasmine Crockett has noted, the maps would draw her out of her current district. This is a blatant attack on due process, democratic representation, and Black political power.
We call on Black communities across this country to remain vigilant. This intentional attack to violate and suppress the basic human rights of Black voters requires us to join in this fight. Let us remember the legacy of Kwame Ture, Stokely Carmichael, Fannie Lou Hamer, and so many others who challenged power and built movements rooted in justice and liberation.
