June 2024 Redesignation and Extension of TPS Haiti

BAJI WELCOMES REDESIGNATION AND EXTENSION OF TPS FOR HAITIANS IN THE US AND ASKS FOR A MORATORIUM ON DEPORTATIONS TO HAITI

Washington DC- June 28th, 2024– The Biden administration has redesignated and extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to some Haitians in the US.  This long awaited reprieve will offer temporary protection from detention and deportation for certain Haitians already in the US.

While this is good news for qualifying Haitians, it is absolutely unconscionable that the Biden administration has dragged its feet over redesignating TPS to the last damn minute. This redesignation comes just four days before the expiration of TPS for Haitians. Of note, TPS only applies to Haitians who have arrived in the U.S. on or before June 3rd, 2024. This impacts existing TPS holders and new applicants who can now apply for work permits that will last from Aug. 4, 2024, to Feb. 3, 2026 unless a more permanent solution is given.

The Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI) has advocated for several years for permanent protections for Haitians and other Black migrants facing separation from family and community in the US. We demand a moratorium on expulsions and deportations to Haiti and that Haitians be granted a direct pathway to citizenship.

BAJI continues to demand a stop to deportations and for the US government to institute immigration policies that give permanent protections to all under-documented and undocumented migrants living in the US.
