LA Councilmember De Léon Must Resign

Immigrant Advocacy Organizations Across Los Angeles Demand The Immediate Resignation of LA City Councilmember Kevin De Léon

We the undersigned are writing to echo the calls for Councilman Kevin De Léon to resign for his clear and unquestionable anti-Blackness.

Those among us who have supported Kevin De Léon regretfully acknowledge the historic role that our organizations and leadership have played in uplifting him to represent us and bring unity for the people of Los Angeles. We recognize both his failure and betrayal of that support.  We can no longer support his leadership and denounce his recent actions to further divide the community.

We stand alongside Black community members in rejecting Kevin De Leon’s attempts at destroying the solidarity we have worked so hard to build among our communities. We recognize that several organizations that represent the people of Los Angeles poured immense time, labor, and money into uplifting De Léon to a place of power and leadership. The division and hurt that has resulted from his statements captured in the leaked recording and his political maneuvering alongside Martinez and Cedillo highlight one simple fact: De Léon’s incumbency has not “lift[ed] up communities overlooked and underrepresented” as he claims. Rather, he has exacerbated our oppression, and furthered the divide between communities in our city.

We cannot subject ourselves to further gaslighting or harm, this betrayal can only be remedied through De Léon’s resignation.

We build collective power by renouncing the bigotry that only serves to divide us. 

We collectively reject anti-Blackness and will not allow it to fester in our community. Kevin De Léon engaged in anti-Black actions and rhetoric that simply don’t reflect the communities that elevated him. He participated in a conversation that contained and embodied the racist violence we work to end. We refuse to participate in the weaponization of anti-Blackness to pit our communities against one another. To continue to stand by Kevin De Léon in light of his clear anti-Blackness would be deplorable, to remain silent while he tries to evade accountability would be unethical. We invite the full breadth of organizations, representing the many communities in Los Angeles, to join us in demanding Kevin De Léon’s resignation.

We will continue to build a stronger and more powerful Los Angeles, we will mend the wounds
these elected leaders have inflicted upon our city. The first step in doing so is for Kevin De Léon to resign.

Organizaciones de Defensa de Inmigrantes en Todo Los Ángeles Exigen Kevin De Léon, Concejal de la Ciudad de Los Ángeles, Renuncia Inmediatamente

Los abajo firmantes escribimos para hacer eco de los pedidos de renuncia del concejal Kevin De Léon por su clara e incuestionable anti-negritud.

Aquellos de nosotros que hemos apoyado a Kevin De Léon lamentamos reconocer el papel histórico que nuestras organizaciones y liderazgo han desempeñado para alentarlo a que nos represente y promueva la unidad entre el pueblo de Los Ángeles. Reconocemos tanto su fracaso como la traición de ese apoyo. Ya no podemos apoyar su liderazgo y denunciamos sus acciones recientes para dividir aún más a la comunidad.

Nos unimos a los miembros de la comunidad negra para rechazar los intentos de Kevin De Leon de destruir la solidaridad que hemos trabajado tan duro para construir entre nuestras comunidades. Reconocemos que varias organizaciones que representan a la gente de Los Ángeles invirtieron mucho tiempo, trabajo y dinero para elevar a De Léon a un lugar de poder y liderazgo. La división y el dolor que han resultado de sus declaraciones capturadas en la grabación filtrada y su maniobra política junto a Martínez y Cedillo resaltan un hecho simple: la titularidad de De Léon no ha “elevado a comunidades ignoradas y subrepresentadas”, como él afirma. Más bien, ha exacerbado nuestra opresión y ha fomentado la división entre las comunidades de nuestra ciudad.

No podemos someternos a más manipulacion y daños, esta traición solo puede remediarse a través de la renuncia de De Léon.

Construimos poder colectivo renunciando al fanatismo que solo sirve para dividirnos.

Rechazamos colectivamente la anti-negritud y no permitiremos que se haga una ulcera en nuestra comunidad. Kevin De Léon se involucró en acciones y retórica anti-negra que simplemente no reflejan las comunidades que lo elevaron. Participó en una conversación que contenía y encarnaba la violencia racista contra la que trabajamos. Nos negamos a participar en la armamentización de la lucha contra la negritud para enfrentar a nuestras comunidades entre sí. Dada la luz de su clara oposición a la negritud, sería deplorable seguir apoyando a Kevin De Léon , permanecer en silencio mientras trata de evadir la responsabilidad no sería ético. Invitamos a todas las organizaciones, que representan a las muchas comunidades de Los Ángeles, a unirse a nosotros para exigir la renuncia de Kevin De Léon.

Continuaremos construyendo un Los Ángeles más fuerte y poderoso, curaremos las heridas. Estos líderes electos han infligido a nuestra ciudad. El primer paso para hacerlo es la renuncia de Kevin De Léon
